Maze Generator Basics

  • Your goal is to create a continuous path from the Green zone (start) to the Red zone (finish).
  • Click squares to “light up” the route. Each square must connect to the next one.
  • When the maze is complete and usable, it will switch from Red (Invalid) to Green (Valid).

Make It Harder

  • Add dead ends and junctions to hide the correct gesture.
  • Try not to make the solution a straight line — corners + choices = harder to “read.”
  • If it won’t validate, double-check there’s an unbroken connection from start to finish.

Materials

  • 1 sheet of 3 mm plywood (approx. 12" × 18")
  • Scrap plywood (same thickness) for engraving depth tests
  • Wood glue or super glue (CA)
  • Optional: wax/finish

Hardware

  • 1 brass BB (maze ball)
  • 2 small springs (salvaged from click pens)
  • 3 mm metal rod / nail / coat-hanger wire (pivot pins)
  • Pivot pins should have wiggle room (do not glue, not press-fit)
  • Optional: 3 mm × 1 mm magnet (usually 1 magnet spot is enough)

Color Code (SVG)

  • Black – Cut
  • Green – Score
  • Orange – Engrave (depth-critical)
  • Purple – Notes / Reference only (do not cut / score / engrave)

Engraving Depth (Critical)

  • Maze floor engraving should be ~1 mm deep (varies by plywood + laser).
  • Always test on scrap of the same material.
  • Good test: stack a second sheet on top and confirm the BB still rolls freely.
  • Light sanding or careful chiseling helps smooth engraved paths.

Cleanliness Matters

  • Keep glue out of moving parts and maze channels.
  • Wax helps: moving parts should slide, not grind.

Start Here

  • Confirm engraving depth first, then sand/clean the engraved maze floor so the BB rolls freely.
  • Dry-fit each step as you stack layers.
  • Pivot pins must have wiggle room — don’t glue them and don’t force a tight fit.

Recommended Assembly Order

  1. Bottom + Layer #5:
Start from the bottom layer and glue Layer #5 on top. Layer #5 has three engraved pockets for spring clearance and the final BB resting position.
  2. Layer #4 (mechanism layer):
Install the two moving pieces and the two springs. Lightly wax the moving parts for smooth travel. This layer holds the pivot point — place the pivots and hinge pieces here (with clearance).
  3. Layer #3 (clearance engraving):
Sand the engraved area as needed so the BB can move freely when Layer #2 is placed on top (do not glue yet).
  4. Layer #2 (maze + magnet):
Place the magnet (if using) in one of the two magnet locations — usually one is enough. Use a 3 mm × 1 mm magnet, glued to the wall closest to where the BB rests.
  5. Clamp-test with Layer #1 (do not glue yet):
Clamp Layer #1 on top and verify:
    • The BB reaches the finish smoothly
    • The button works with the BB in the finish position
    • The BB can be returned back toward the magnet
Only glue once everything works smoothly.
  6. Glue Layer #1:
After confirming movement + button function, glue Layer #1 in place.

Lid (Do This Last)

  • The lid is 2 pieces. Glue the lid layers together after the box body is complete so you can confirm orientation.
  • Test-fit the latch and hinge parts before gluing — material thickness affects sizing.
  • Glue the lid onto the hinge pivots first, then glue the latch in the correct orientation.

Operation

  • To close the box, the BB must be in the finish location.
  • To reset, reverse the maze path to return the BB toward the magnet.

Adhesives

  • CA glue works well for small parts.
  • Wood glue + clamps works well for the layer stack.
  • Avoid glue near moving parts and maze channels.
